“You're never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child.” – Dr. Seuss
Six members of the Hilliard Law team traded their usual work attire for red-and-white striped hats and headed to Travis Elementary School in Corpus Christi to spread the joy of reading. The occasion was National Read Across America Day, an annual celebration of literacy held every March 2 in honor of Dr. Seuss's birthday.
For one morning, our team became honorary members of the Cat in the Hat's crew, settling into classrooms with picture books in hand and no shortage of enthusiasm. The room was abuzz with kids leaning in for every page and laughing at every rhyme. It was a great reminder of just how much a good story can mean to a child.
This year's event was made even more meaningful through our partnership with United Way, which helped us send every student we read to home with a brand-new book of their own. Watching a child's face light up over a book they get to keep is the kind of moment that makes this event one of our favorites on the calendar each year.
Travis Elementary was just one stop among dozens across the Corpus Christi Independent School District, where community leaders and local business owners volunteered their morning to read to students and celebrate literacy together. We're proud to be part of a community that shows up for its kids in such a fun yet impactful way.
Investing in the next generation's love of reading fits naturally into who we are at Hilliard Law. Just as we fight for our clients inside the courtroom, we believe in showing up for our neighbors outside of it, and this event is one small piece of a much bigger commitment we have to our communities.
Nearly 30 years ago, the National Education Association (NEA) created Read Across America to inspire a lifelong love of reading in children everywhere. Dr. Seuss may have written those words decades ago, but they still ring true: you're never too old, too wacky, or too wild to pick up a book and read to a child — which is why we hope to be back in the classroom for National Read Across America Day again next year!
